Where the popes fled, and the bridge runs out mid-river.

Between 1309 and 1377, seven consecutive popes lived in Avignon rather than Rome. They did not come reluctantly. The Palais des Papes, begun in 1316 and completed by 1370, is one of the largest Gothic buildings in Europe and was the most important structure in medieval Christendom for most of that century. Pope Clement VI purchased the town outright from Joanna I of Naples in 1348, the year of the Black Death. The city remained under papal control for four and a half more centuries, until the French Revolution absorbed it in 1791.

The famous bridge, the Pont Saint-Bénézet, was built in the 12th century with 22 arches spanning the Rhone.

Four remain. The song about dancing on it, Sur le Pont d'Avignon, dates to 1853 and describes something that was already impossible to do. Avignon is full of this quality: history so present it becomes strange, the medieval walls (4,330 meters of them, with 39 towers) still enclosing the center like a parenthesis. UNESCO designated the whole ensemble a World Heritage Site in 1995.

When is the best time to do an Avignon walking tour?expand_more

Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the best balance of warm weather and manageable crowds. July brings the Festival d'Avignon, which fills the streets with energy but also with crowds. August is very hot, sometimes exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.

How do I get to Avignon?expand_more

Avignon has two train stations. Avignon TGV is a high-speed station about 2 kilometers from the center with fast connections to Paris (about 2.5 hours) and Marseille (35 minutes). Avignon Centre station, closer to the historic walls, handles regional trains. A shuttle connects the two stations.

Is Avignon accessible for walking tours?expand_more

The historic center inside the medieval walls is mostly flat and walkable. The Palais des Papes area and the riverside have some slight gradients but nothing demanding. The old town's streets are narrow in places but generally navigable.

Can I walk across the famous bridge?expand_more

You can walk onto the Pont Saint-Bénézet but not across it. Only four of the original 22 arches survive, ending mid-river. There is an admission fee to walk onto the bridge structure. The view from the promenade along the Rhone is free and equally dramatic.

What local food should I look for in Avignon?expand_more

The Rhone Valley and Provence surrounding Avignon produce excellent food. Look for tapenade, brandade de morue, and Provencal dishes built around olive oil, herbs, and summer vegetables. The Avignon market on Place Pie operates most mornings. Local wines from Chateauneuf-du-Pape are only a short drive away.
