Portland was officially founded in 1845 by two pioneers, Francis W. Pettygrove and William Overton, who chose the location for its advantageous position along the Willamette River. The name "Portland" was selected by a coin toss between the two men, with Pettygrove favoring his hometown of Portland, Maine. The city's strategic location quickly made it a thriving hub for trade and transportation.
