Bratislava
Bratislava, the capital and largest city of Slovakia, has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. The area has been settled since 5000 B.C. during the Neolithic period, with the first significant settlement established by the Celtic Boii tribe around 200 B.C.. They created a fortified town known as an oppidum, where coins called biatecs were minted, marking the beginning of trade.
As the Romans extended their influence from the 1st to the 4th centuries A.D., Bratislava became part of the Danubian Limes, which served as a defense system against invasions. The Romans introduced grape cultivation to the region, starting a winemaking tradition that continues today.
