Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city of Argentina, boasts a rich and diverse history that shapes its vibrant culture today. From its founding in the 16th century to its status as a global city, Buenos Aires is a story of resilience, transformation, and multiculturalism.
Buenos Aires was established on February 2, 1536, by Spanish explorer Pedro de Mendoza as “Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre,” named after the Virgin of Bonaria, who sailors believed provided them with favorable winds for their journey. The settlement was located in what is now the San Telmo district. However, it faced immediate challenges, including attacks from indigenous populations, which led to its abandonment in 1541.
