Sydney, the capital city of New South Wales, is Australia's most populous city, boasting a rich tapestry of history that dates back over 30,000 years. Long before European settlement, the region was home to Indigenous Australians, specifically the Darug, Dharawal, and Eora clans. Their deep connection to the land is evidenced by cultural sites and engravings scattered throughout the area.

It was in 1770 that European interest in Sydney was piqued when Captain James Cook charted the eastern coastline of Australia, landing at Botany Bay. However, it wasn't until January 1788 that a permanent settlement was established when the First Fleet arrived, marking Sydney's foundation as a British penal colony. Led by Governor Arthur Phillip, this first fleet brought convicts, free settlers, and military personnel, fundamentally changing the landscape and culture of the region.
