Asuncion ranks among the safer Latin American capitals, though street crime exists and caution with valuables is advisable, particularly in crowded markets and around bus terminals.

Chipa is a chewy cheese bread made from cassava flour sold at roadside stalls throughout the city. Asado (grilled meat), mbeju (cassava starch flatbread), and chicha (fermented corn drink) are all part of the local food culture. The Mercado 4 in the city center is the most atmospheric place to eat.
