Batumi has been ruled by Ancient Greeks, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Imperial Russia, briefly by the British (1918 to 1920), the Soviets, and now Georgia since independence in 1991. That succession of rulers has left an architectural palimpsest that is strange and compelling: Ottoman mosques stand next to Russian Orthodox churches and Soviet modernist housing blocks, while glass casino towers and a 130-meter Alphabet Tower inscribed with the Georgian script have been added in the post-independence development boom that turned Batumi into the Caucasus region's most ambitious resort project.
The seafront Batumi Boulevard, a four-kilometer pedestrian promenade, anchors the city's beach resort identity.
The subtropical climate on this corner of the Black Sea supports tea and citrus cultivation in the surrounding Adjara region, and the Batumi Botanical Garden, founded in 1912 on a cape north of the city, holds one of the more extraordinary collections of subtropical plants in Europe, arranged across a hillside with sea views. At the mouth of the Chorokhi River, 15 kilometers south of the city, the Gonio Fortress preserves a 1st-century Roman fortification that some historians associate with Apsaros, a stop on Jason and the Argonauts' legendary route.

Before you walk.
Adjarian khachapuri is a boat-shaped bread filled with molten cheese (typically a mix of local imeruli and sulguni), with a raw egg and butter added while hot. The standard method is to tear off pieces of the bread crust and dip them into the molten center. Every family in Batumi has an opinion on who makes the best; the bakeries on and around Pushkin Street in the old town are a reliable starting point.
Yes. The Batumi Botanical Garden, established in 1912 on a cape north of the city, covers 113 hectares with collections of subtropical and Mediterranean plants arranged by geographical origin. The site has sea views and is one of the most peaceful places in the city. Admission is charged; the journey from downtown by minibus or taxi takes about 20 minutes.
The Gonio Apsaros Fortress, 15 kilometers south of Batumi near the Turkish border, is a remarkably well-preserved 1st-century Roman fortification with 18 towers and 900-meter perimeter walls. The site is associated in local tradition with Apsaros, a stop on the Argonauts' route. An on-site museum displays Roman and Byzantine artifacts from excavations. It is open daily.
Batumi transforms dramatically by season. In July and August the resort fills with Georgian and Turkish vacationers, the beach promenade is crowded, and the casinos and nightlife are at full intensity. The subtropical climate means it rains frequently even in summer. In winter the city is quiet and atmospheric, with mild temperatures by Central Asian standards, cheaper accommodation, and the restaurants and old town almost entirely to yourself.
