   As you approach the Noviodunum, you’ll notice an impressive remnant from the past right in front of you. Look for three towering columns, made of stone and standing proudly against the backdrop of Lake Geneva and a mountainous landscape. The columns are partially weathered, with classical capitals at the top, hinting at their ancient Roman origins. The tallest two columns still have their entablature connecting them, which gives you a glimpse into the grand architectural style used in Roman times. Noviodunum, also known as Colonia Iulia Equestris, was a vibrant Roman-era settlement in what is now Nyon. The name Noviodunum has Celtic origins, meaning "new fort," derived from "nowyo" (new) and "dun" (hillfort or fortified settlement). It's a lovely mix of history! Founded around 46-44 BC by Julius Caesar himself, this colonia initially housed army veterans, mostly cavalrymen, hence the name Equestris. Imagine all those Roman soldiers walking around, possibly bragging about their latest conquests. The settlement was part of a network radiating from Lugdunum (modern Lyon, France) for controlling the Rhone Valley. Talk about a strategic location! During its heyday, Noviodunum was bustling with activity. The colony boomed under Emperor Augustus with a grid pattern layout and a monumental center housing everything needed for daily life. They had public baths, a forum, market buildings, and a two-story basilica! Maybe they even had ancient baristas making some kind of Roman cappuccino. The city was unwalled, which was quite unusual for its time. They had a fantastic aqueduct running about 10 km to ensure a steady water supply. Hygiene was important - sewage canals directed waste into the lake, making sure the city stayed relatively clean.
