It was one of six public squares designed by Colonel William Light back in 1837, right when he was mapping out the city's grid surrounding the River Torrens. Originally named after Princess Victoria, who later became the iconic British monarch, Victoria Square earned itself a dual name in 2003 as part of an initiative to honor the Kaurna people, the original inhabitants of the area. So, it’s not just a square; it’s a union of two rich histories - British colonial and Indigenous Australian. A lot has happened in this bustling square over the years. During Christmas, the northern part of the square transforms with a towering 24.5-metre (80 ft) tall Christmas tree, adding a festive sparkle to the city. Built between 1976 and 1983, the station complex includes several auxiliary buildings and a tall concrete training tower.
