Inverness, often referred to as the "Capital of the Highlands," holds a rich history that stretches back over 5,000 years. With its strategic location at the mouth of the River Ness, it has been a vital settlement since the Mesolithic period. The city's origins can be traced to a self-governing community that emerged around the 6th century, marked by the granting of its first Royal Charter by King David I circa 1160.

Inverness is believed to have been established around 5,800 BC, which makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in Scotland. Archaeological excavations have unearthed evidence of human settlement during the Late Mesolithic period, revealing a community engaged in trade and skilled in metalworking.
