Pavia, a charming city located in the Lombardy region of Italy, boasts a rich history that dates back to antiquity. Originally founded as a Celtic settlement, it was known as Bagum, a name attributed to its early inhabitants. The strategic location along the Ticino River made it an ideal spot for trade and defense.

With the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century BC, the settlement was transformed into a key fortification known as Papia. The Roman influence is still evident today through the remnants of ancient structures and roads. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Pavia became the capital of the Lombard Kingdom in the 6th century, showcasing its importance in early medieval politics.
