St. Petersburg, Florida averages more than 300 days of sunshine per year, which is a fact the city has been advertising since a 1910 promotional campaign and has never needed to update. The Salvador Dali Museum on Beach Drive is the most concentrated collection of Dali's work anywhere in the world outside Spain.

It houses 96 oil paintings, including the monumental Hallucinogenic Toreador, displayed in a purpose-built building with a geodesic glass bubble rising from its facade that the architect Yann Weymouth designed as a kind of controlled explosion. The building makes the art's surrealism feel architecturally anticipated. The collection came to St. Petersburg not by historical accident but because the Morse family of Ohio spent decades acquiring it and chose this city as its permanent home in 1982.
