Before the neon of Route 66, there was only dust, iron, and the sheer will to survive in the Mojave. Welcome to Kingman. I am Adam, and I will be your guide today. We are going to explore how a rugged frontier outpost carved itself out of the harsh landscape, built on grit and a whole lot of steam. You can almost smell the coal and hear the old locomotives echoing off the canyon walls. The Santa Fe Railway was the absolute lifeline here, pulling a reluctant march of progress right through the desert. It was a rough transition, but they made it stick. As we wander, this audio will start playing automatically when you reach each landmark. If it gets shy, just tap play yourself. If you happen to take a wrong turn, the map on your screen has your back, and you can always ask questions in the chat at any stop. A quick tip before we start... the desert does not mess around, so carry some water and watch for cars when crossing the streets. Let's head to our first stop, where the iron lifeline of Kingman still rumbles today. Make your way over to the Kingman station.
