Chapel Hill
Founded in the late 18th century, Chapel Hill has a rich history that reflects the evolution of the southern United States. The town was established in 1792 and named after a local church, New Hope Chapel, located on a nearby hill. Its founding was part of a larger effort to create a central location for the new university, which later became the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC)—the first public university in the United States.
