Alright, and welcome to Southport... a town dressed up in terraces, glass, and grand fronts, built to delight the visitor. But just behind that neat show was another Southport altogether... the one run by porters, boat hands, bath attendants, barmen, builders, and lifeboatmen.
As we wander, listen for the people who kept the resort going: the pier tram driver taking his sixpenny toll, the attendants managing two hundred and fifty thousand gallons of sea water, the arcade builder borrowing electric light to dazzle a crowd, and the railway porter who stayed put until the buses took over. They do not always make the postcards... but they are the heart of the place.
Your audio should start on its own as you reach each stop, though you can tap to play it yourself if needed. If you lose your bearings, use the map in the app, and if something sparks your curiosity, send a question in chat at any stop. Mind the traffic on Lord Street, and take care near the water’s edge. Right then..
