Today, I’ll lead you through two stunning landmarks that tell the story of Lagos’ vibrant Muslim community: the Lagos Central Mosque and the majestic Shitta-Bey Mosque. I hope you brought your curiosity with you-good walking shoes wouldn’t hurt either!
As you stroll through the city, listen for my voice when you’re near each landmark. If it doesn’t play automatically (sometimes technology likes to nap), just tap “play” in your app. Don’t worry if you miss a turn or get distracted by local sights (or maybe the smell of fresh suya grilling nearby)-you can always glance at the map in your app to find your way back to the route.
A quick heads-up: today, we’ll be visiting places of deep religious significance. At these stops, it’s respectful to dress modestly-think covered shoulders and long trousers or skirts. No swimsuits or tank tops, please (save those for the beach later!).
While exploring Lagos on foot, keep a few things in mind. Stay aware of traffic-it can be a bit like frogger out here, except the frogs are the cars, and you really want to avoid them. Also, keep your belongings close, and stay on busy streets when you can. And always-always-cross at the traffic lights. If you try to jaywalk here, you might just invent a new sport.
At every stop, feel free to ask me questions in the chat below. I’m always around-no matter what time zone you’re in!
So, are you ready? If you haven’t already, make your way to the first stop: the grand Lagos Central Mosque. That’s our starting line! Let’s discover some dazzling minarets and mysterious mosaics together. I’ll see you-metaphorically-at stop number one!
