Situated at an impressive elevation of approximately 3,650 meters (11,975 feet), La Paz is renowned as the highest capital city in the world. Officially known as Nuestra Señora de La Paz (Our Lady of Peace), it boasts a rich tapestry of history that dates back to its founding in 1548.

La Paz was established on October 20, 1548, by Spanish conquistador Captain Alonso de Mendoza. It rose from the remnants of the Inca settlement of Laja and served as a crucial junction for trade routes linking Potosí and Oruro to Lima. The city's full name initially commemorated the restoration of peace after a civil unrest involving Gonzalo Pizarro and his fellow conquistadors.
