Okay, we’re approaching the final stop on our tour, the Adelaide Gaol! As you walk, you’ll notice a rather striking building with high stone walls and it has a somewhat forbidding presence. The building looks like something straight out of a historical drama, so it should be hard to miss!
Now, Adelaide Gaol has a storied past. It’s one of the oldest surviving buildings in South Australia and operated as a prison from 1841 to 1988. That’s almost 150 years! Just imagine the number of stories these walls could tell. Over 300,000 prisoners were housed here, and it was infamous for being the location of many public executions. Spooky, right?
But let’s lighten the mood - Adelaide Gaol is now a museum and a popular tourist attraction. So don’t worry, no one's escaping today except maybe for your sense of time as you get lost in its fascinating history! Comparing it to a town like Kawamoto in Japan, which merged into a larger city back in 2006, you can see how Adelaide Gaol has remained a steadfast presence even as the world around it has changed. So, step inside if you dare and explore the rich history lurking within these historic walls.
