Aachen was Charlemagne's city, his capital, the place where he concentrated the authority of the revived Western Empire around 800 AD. Walk into the Palatine Chapel and the visual richness of it still registers as something out of the ordinary for a mid-sized German city on the edge of three countries.

The old town still has medieval bones: the Rathaus, built around 1330 on the foundations of Charlemagne's original audience hall, anchors the Marktplatz, while the thermal springs that Romans called Aquis Villa and later drew syphilis patients from across Europe in the 17th century still bubble up in the Elisenbrunnen.
