Picture this: back in the 13th century, Tbilisi already had a thriving Armenian community building their distinctive brick churches, and this little gem was their pride and joy. It was rebuilt entirely in 1756, which, in Tbilisi terms, is basically yesterday.
The church was designed with a cross-shaped interior, all tucked neatly inside a rectangular shell-kind of like when you try to wrap a birthday present and the corners never quite line up. Fast forward to the Soviet era: the Mughni Church spent some time moonlighting as a museum, showing off folk art until the mid-1980s. But then things took a nosedive. By the ‘90s, the place was in rough shape, and the church’s beautiful dome finally gave up the ghost in 2009, thanks to some relentless Georgian rain. But hey, even in ruin, this place stands as a stubborn reminder of the city's tangled, multicultural past.
