Huntington sits on Long Island's north shore in Suffolk County, a town where colonial-era streets run alongside one of the most appealing village centers on the island. The main strip around New York Avenue and Main Street fills with independent restaurants and boutiques that draw commuters and weekenders alike, all set against a harbor that opens onto Huntington Bay.

The poet Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in West Hills, a hamlet that falls within the Town of Huntington, and his spirit still lingers in the landscape of rolling hills and tidal inlets.

During the Revolutionary War, British forces occupied the town for seven years, a period memorialized at the Arsenal and in the town's historical archive. Heckscher Museum of Art holds a respectable collection of American and European works just a short walk from the water.
