Oxford Audio Tour: Behind the Gown

Guía de audio15 paradas

Oxford's spires belong to the colleges. The streets between them belong to a different city — the boatmen who built college barges at Folly Bridge, the bleating-voiced sweetshop keeper Alice Liddell loved, the Town Hall librarians who issued tickets for seventy-six years, the medieval brewers and vintners killed in the bell-tower brawl of 1355, the 17th-century ostler whose house is now the Bear, the two prison guards who held Oliver Butler's arms in 1952, the brewer dynasty whose 132 tied pubs watered the town from 1743, the bargees who hauled hay and slate to Hythe Bridge for six centuries, the bicycle apprentice William Morris who bought and buried Oxford's coal wharf for the price of a Cotswold college, the Bocardo turnkeys of St Michael's North Gate, the David Johns and the Mitzi Fellers who supplied 350 Christ Church mouths a sitting, the marmalade widow Sarah Jane Cooper, Mrs Ducker who ran an Oxford shoemaker's for a fortnight after her husband died, and the same Morris who built his first car in a stable on Longwall. This is the town that fed, clothed, printed, shod, brewed and ferried the gown — and whose names rarely made it onto the plaques.

Salter's Steamers LtdThe boatyard at the north end of Folly Bridge where John and Stephen Salter took over Isaac King's yard in 1858, on a wharf already dating to 1638. Four generations of the Andrews family worked here as boatbuilders, mechanics, skippers and college watermen — Len from 1930, his brothers Fred, George and Albert alongside him. They built rowing boats, racing eights, college barges, paddle steamers and lifeboats; Len and Albert were training for the 1948 Olympics until the authorities ruled them too professional for living on the water.

Alice's ShopA 15th-century stone shopfront opposite Christ Church Memorial Garden. For over a hundred years it traded as a newsagent and sweetshop. Its most famous customer was Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church; its most famous shopkeeper has no name. Lewis Carroll turned her into the Sheep in Through the Looking-Glass (1871) on the strength of her 'bleating' voice.

84 High StThe Oxfordshire Blue Plaque at 84 High Street marks where Sarah Jane Cooper, aged 24, made 76 lb of marmalade in the kitchen above her husband Frank's grocery in 1874. The shop was Frank's grocer's; the marmalade was hers; the brand bore his name. Production grew large enough that in 1903 it had to move to a purpose-built Park End Street factory to comply with the Factory and Workshop Act 1901. By the 1930s the factory employed around a hundred staff.

6 Turl StThe shopfront of Ducker & Son, bespoke shoemakers from 1898 to November 2016. Founded by Edward Ducker; after his death in 1947 his wife took over the business and died two weeks later. Bob and Isobel Avery handcrafted shoes there from 2006 until closure. The Bodleian holds eleven leather-bound ledgers covering 1910-58, recording JRR Tolkien's 14s 6d rugby boots, Evelyn Waugh's twenty pairs between 1930 and 1946, and H. H. Asquith's lambswool slippers.

Esta fue una forma sólida de conocer Brighton sin sentirme como un turista. La narración tenía profundidad y contexto, pero no se excedía.
