Johannesburg, colloquially known as Jozi or Joburg, is the most populous city in South Africa, boasting a vibrant population of over 5.5 million in the city itself and more than 14.8 million in the urban area, classifying it as a megacity. The city was founded in 1886 after the discovery of gold by Jan Gerritse Bantjes on his farm, Vogelstruisfontein. This sparked the Witwatersrand Gold Rush, attracting a rush of fortune seekers that ballooned the population to over 100,000 within a decade. The origin of the city’s name, “Johannesburg,” is attributed to various figures associated with its early history, including surveyors and government officials such as Christian Johannes Joubert and Johannes Rissik.
