London has been burning and rebuilding for two thousand years. The Romans planted it as a tax post called Londinium in AD 47, Boudicca razed it to ash a decade later, and it simply grew back larger. The Great Fire of 1666 handed Christopher Wren the chance to rebuild an entire skyline, giving the city St Paul's Cathedral and thirty city churches in one generation. The Blitz killed over thirty thousand Londoners and flattened whole districts, and again the city came back, this time as one of the most multicultural places on Earth, with more than three hundred languages now spoken within its thirty-two boroughs.

That relentless reinvention is what you feel in your feet when you walk it.

Five minutes from the medieval lanes of the City of London, you are standing beneath the glass towers of Canary Wharf. Turn off the Royal Mile in Southwark and you stumble into Victorian railway arches now housing wine bars and ceramics studios. The Underground, opened in 1863 and still unmistakably itself, connects worlds that would otherwise never touch, from the salt-and-chips Bermondsey market to the immaculate Georgian squares of Belgravia.
