Look for three towering columns, made of stone and standing proudly against the backdrop of Lake Geneva and a mountainous landscape. The columns are partially weathered, with classical capitals at the top, hinting at their ancient Roman origins. The tallest two columns still have their entablature connecting them, which gives you a glimpse into the grand architectural style used in Roman times. Noviodunum, also known as Colonia Iulia Equestris, was a vibrant Roman-era settlement in what is now Nyon. The name Noviodunum has Celtic origins, meaning "new fort," derived from "nowyo" (new) and "dun" (hillfort or fortified settlement). It's a lovely mix of history! Founded around 46-44 BC by Julius Caesar himself, this colonia initially housed army veterans, mostly cavalrymen, hence the name Equestris.
