Oradea stands in the Crisana region of western Romania, just kilometers from the Hungarian border, and the city's architecture announces that it spent centuries as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the early 20th century, during the final prosperous decades before World War One, a wave of Secession and Art Nouveau construction transformed Oradea into one of the most architecturally coherent cities in the region.
