Introduction to Palacio de Revillagigedo

Located in the charming Gijón, Spain, the Palacio de Revillagigedo stands as one of the city's most impressive historical landmarks. This architectural gem, also known as the Palace of the Marquis of San Esteban de Natahoyo, exemplifies 18th-century Asturian architecture and serves as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage.

Historical Significance

The palace was commissioned by Carlos Miguel Ramírez de Jove, the first marquis of San Esteban de Natahoyo, in 1704. Utilizing a pre-existing medieval Gothic tower from the 15th century, this magnificent building took 17 years to complete, with the final touches wrapped up in 1721 under the guidance of architect Francisco Menéndez Camina.

Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1974, Palacio de Revillagigedo showcases a blend of historical styles and serves a dual purpose today; it is both a stunning example of historical architecture and a cultural site managed by the Caja de Ahorros de Asturias Foundation.

The Architectural Marvel

The palace features a unique structure characterized by two fortified towers and a central body that gracefully connects them. The architectural design reflects a stark contrast: the sturdy and austere towers juxtapose the ornate and highly decorative middle section.

  • The central facade is divided into five segments, beginning at the ground level.
  • It boasts a porch supported by columns that extend elegantly towards the roof.
  • The central section is wider, featuring ionic columns on the ground floor and composite order columns on the first floor.
  • Notably, the first floor holds the noble sections of the palace, complete with five exquisite balconies.

The interior unveils a central courtyard structured around eight tuscan columns, showcasing the artistic and architectural sensibilities of the time.

Exploring the Colegiata de San Juan Bautista

Adjacent to the palace stands the Colegiata de San Juan Bautista, a baroque chapel completed fifteen years after the palace. This monument shares architectural features with the palace and was financed by the prior of the cathedral in Oviedo. The church’s design includes:

  • A basilica floor plan with three naves.
  • Side galleries reserved for the Marquis's family.
  • A square bell tower that also serves as a portico.
  • A semicircular apse seamlessly integrated into the palace complex.

The interplay of stonework and artistic design in the chapel further adds to the cultural heritage embodied in this remarkable site.
