Introduction to Granada Studios Tour

Located in the vibrant town of Stretford, the Granada Studios Tour was a beloved cultural site that ran from 1988 to 1999. Designed as an entertainment theme park, it invited visitors to step into the world of television magic at the Granada Studios complex, nestled in the heart of Manchester.

Granada Studios Tour collected over 5 million visitors during its glory years, allowing fans to explore sets from iconic shows like Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and classic series featuring Sherlock Holmes. Despite its charm, the tour eventually closed in 1999 due to declining visitor numbers and a shift in Granada Television's business priorities.

A Brief Historical Overview

The ideation for Granada Studios Tour began with David Plowright, a Granada Television producer with a passion for revitalizing the underutilized land around the studios. His initial vision turned into a substantial investment from Granada Group, aimed at creating a "Hollywood-on-the-Irwell" experience. The tour officially opened in July 1988, featuring an engaging fusion of mock sets, live performances, and behind-the-scenes experiences.

Experiencing the Tour

The tour featured an impressive array of attractions and amenities:

  • Mock Sets: Visitors could walk through recreations of famed locations such as the caf├й from Coronation Street and Downing Street sets.
  • Live Shows: The tour regularly presented performances including a satirical political debate set in the House of Commons.
  • Iconic Rides: One of the highlights was the MotionMaster ride, immersing riders into a cinematic experience.
  • Celebrity Encounters: Guests had opportunities to film scenes alongside their favorite Coronation Street characters using chroma key technology.

Granada Studios TourтАЩs End and Legacy

By the late 1990s, visitor numbers dwindled, and Granada Television began to pivot its focus. The tour closed its doors to the public permanently in 2001, yet the lure of its famous Coronation Street set led to a temporary reopening in 2014, attracting nostalgia-driven crowds until 2015.

"The Granada Studios Tour was a true journey into television history, blending the magic of the small screen with the reality of its production processes."

Despite challenges and the eventual demolition of many of its structures, the legacy of the Granada Studios Tour remains a critical part of Manchester's cultural heritage.

Exploring Stretford and Beyond

Today, while the original Granada Studios Tour is no longer active, Stretford offers many opportunities to explore its rich cultural landscape and heritage sites. Visitors can dive into experiences that celebrate the vibrant community and intriguing history of the area, along with the breadth of modern attractions.

With its historical landmarks and urban allure, Stretford continues to be a destination for city exploration and a gateway to discovering what the United Kingdom has to offer.

The Modern Rebirth of Granada Studios

In August 2015, plans for the development of the South Village project were approved, set to transform the old Granada Studios area into a neighborhood with shops and innovative workspaces. Although the physical structures of the past may no longer stand, the impact of the beloved Granada Studios Tour will forever echo in the hearts of those who visited.
