Look ahead and you'll see a striking white building that seems to be a classic postcard image - that's Nyon Castle! With its pristine white walls, the castle stands strong and proud, demonstrating its medieval roots. You'll notice three conical roofs, with the tallest tower sporting a flag at the top. The castle seamlessly blends robust square towers and a curved turret, making it quite the eye-catcher. The lines of windows along the façade and the large wooden door further add to its historic charm. Nyon Castle is a true gem in the municipality of Nyon, nestled within the Canton of Vaud in Switzerland. This majestic structure isn't just a pretty face; it's a Swiss heritage site of national significance. As you gaze upon it, picture centuries of history unfolding here - knights, nobility, perhaps even the bustling of townsfolk as they went about their day. And if castles could talk, oh the tales Nyon Castle would tell! Built in the 12th century and later remodeled in the 16th century, today it houses a museum with artifacts that span the ages. So, while you're admiring its grand architecture, remember, you're standing in the presence of a true piece of Swiss history!

As you approach the Noviodunum, you’ll notice an impressive remnant from the past right in front of you. Look for three towering columns, made of stone and standing proudly against the backdrop of Lake Geneva and a mountainous landscape. The columns are partially weathered, with classical capitals at the top, hinting at their ancient Roman origins. The tallest two columns still have their entablature connecting them, which gives you a glimpse into the grand architectural style used in Roman times. Noviodunum, also known as Colonia Iulia Equestris, was a vibrant Roman-era settlement in what is now Nyon. The name Noviodunum has Celtic origins, meaning "new fort," derived from "nowyo" (new) and "dun" (hillfort or fortified settlement). It's a lovely mix of history! Founded around 46-44 BC by Julius Caesar himself, this colonia initially housed army veterans, mostly cavalrymen, hence the name Equestris. Imagine all those Roman soldiers walking around, possibly bragging about their latest conquests. The settlement was part of a network radiating from Lugdunum (modern Lyon, France) for controlling the Rhone Valley. Talk about a strategic location! During its heyday, Noviodunum was bustling with activity. The colony boomed under Emperor Augustus with a grid pattern layout and a monumental center housing everything needed for daily life. They had public baths, a forum, market buildings, and a two-story basilica! Maybe they even had ancient baristas making some kind of Roman cappuccino. The city was unwalled, which was quite unusual for its time. They had a fantastic aqueduct running about 10 km to ensure a steady water supply. Hygiene was important - sewage canals directed waste into the lake, making sure the city stayed relatively clean. So, as you stand here, surrounded by these ancient ruins, take a moment to imagine the vibrant life that once thrived in Noviodunum. The stories these stones could tell! Enjoy the blend of history and scenic beauty around you. To expand your understanding of the origin of the name, colonia site or the trade, feel free to engage with me in the chat section below.

Ah, I see you're now approaching the Musée romain de Nyon! To help you spot it, look for a modern building with an entrance under a concrete overhang bearing the name "MUSÉE ROMAIN" in clear letters. It's adjacent to a bright red wall that houses the entrance door. There's often a blue sign on this red wall which might catch your eye as well. Now, let's dive into the fascinating world behind those doors! The Musée romain de Nyon is an archaeological museum located in the town of Nyon, in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It documents and conveys the archaeology and history of the Roman city, Colonia Iulia Equestris, or Noviodunum, from which modern Nyon emerged. This museum is recognized as a cultural property of national significance. The museum was founded in 1860 by a teacher named Théodore Wellauer to display Roman artifacts unearthed in Nyon. Initially, it shared a space with Nyon's historical museum within the town's central castle. But after significant Roman-era findings were excavated in Nyon's old town during the 1970s, the city decided to establish a new dedicated museum. So, in 1978, the modern Musée romain was opened, designed by architect Gabriel Poncet, and later expanded in 1993 and 1996. The museum's collection boasts numerous artifacts from the ancient city, such as architectural fragments, inscriptions, amphoras, everyday items, oil lamps, ceramics, coins, and jewelry. For many artifacts not on permanent display, the museum has a cultural heritage protection warehouse. It also informs visitors about ongoing archaeological research in Nyon and organizes the Film Festival, Festival international du film d’archéologie Nyon. Ready to step back into Roman times? Let’s explore!

Ah, you're almost at the final stop of our tour! Asse (Genfersee) is right ahead. Look out for a serene, gently flowing stream bordered by smooth stones and lush greenery. The water is clear, with reflections of the surrounding trees creating a picturesque scene. The path will lead you to an area where you'll notice a narrow line of forest flanking the water. Now, let's dive into some fun facts! The Asse is an approximately 11-kilometer-long tributary of Lake Geneva located in the Swiss canton of Vaud. It drains an area of 23.79 square kilometers. The source streams of the Asse spring from the eastern slope of La Dôle, above Bonmont, in the municipality of Chéserex near the French border. After the source streams merge in Bonmont, the Asse flows eastwards and briefly forms the border between Chéserex and Gingins. Leaving Gingins, it flows through the northeastern part of Grens. Shortly thereafter, it crosses into the area of Nyon. Here it takes a southwesterly course and, after 11.4 kilometers, it empties into Lake Geneva. Throughout its journey, this charming stream is often accompanied by a narrow strip of forest, giving it a natural, serene ambiance. So there you have it! Enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Asse and take a moment to appreciate the calming sounds of nature all around you. What a delightful way to end your tour!
