Welcome to Casas Consistoriales Altas

In the heart of Baeza, Spain, one can find a gem of historical significance: the Casas Consistoriales Altas. This architectural masterpiece served as the seat of the city council from the late 15th century until 1838 and is a key highlight in Baeza’s diverse array of historical landmarks. The building encapsulates the city's cultural heritage and history, making it a must-visit for those interested in self-guided tours through cultural sites.

A Brief History

Following the decline of the open council (or assembly) of all citizens, which used to convene publicly at Santa María Square, a council of notable citizens was established, supervised by a corregidor appointed by the crown. In the late 15th or early 16th century, this council needed a formal meeting place, for which they appropriated the Cabrera family’s town mansion.

As the council developed its significance, by 1511, concerns had arisen regarding the building's poor condition, prompting urgent renovations that culminated between 1511 and 1526. Over the years, this magnificent structure witnessed transformations, especially during a restoration in 1773 and, most recently, during its use as a music conservatory starting in 1991.

Architectural Highlights

The architecture of Casas Consistoriales Altas showcases a fusion of gothic elements and Renaissance-style embellishments. The oldest part of the building is marked by two ornamental towers on its western façade, with a grand gothic door displaying intricate designs. Visitors will appreciate the following features:

  • Gothic Doorway: The grand entrance presents a unique gothic conopial arch adorned with detailed imposts.
  • Stunning Windows: Two exquisite ajimez-style goth windows frame the façade, embellished with vegetal motifs and the coats of arms of historical figures.
  • Heraldic Symbols: The building houses various shields, including those of the emperor Charles V and local nobility, symbolizing rich historical narratives.

The Interior Experience

Walking through the venerable halls of Casas Consistoriales Altas, one can find well-preserved decor from the original renovations. The entryway to the upper floor is notable for its primitive plasterwork, and the main hall reflects the elegance of the Baroque style through decorative shields.

One of the interesting artifacts within the building is an intricately carved three-key cabinet, formerly used to store records of Baeza’s nobility—today, these records are curated in the Historical Municipal Archive.

Cultural Significance

“Casas Consistoriales Altas is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished buildings in the city.” — José Molina Hipólito

Recognized as part of the Renaissance monumental complex of Baeza, in conjunction with the neighboring town of Úbeda, the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. This esteemed recognition underscores the influence and preservation of the cultural heritage present at this remarkable location.
