Exploring Villa Munda: A Jewel of Zarautz

Nestled within the beautiful coastal town of Zarautz, Villa Munda (known locally as Zeleta Berri) stands as a testament to the area's rich history and architectural beauty. This splendid summer palace, located on Calle de Navarra, embodies the elegance of late 19th-century Spanish architecture and offers visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle of the nobility during that era.

Historical Significance

Villa Munda was built in the late 1800s on the grounds of the town’s former municipal cemetery, an interesting fact that speaks to the site's transformation. Directed by **Pedro González de Velasco**, a prominent physician from Segovia, the villa was constructed with the purpose of serving as a summer residence for wealthy families. In fact, the region attracted various high-society figures, including Queen **Isabel II**, who would spend her summers nearby at the Palacio de Narros.

The architectural style of Villa Munda is eclectic, inspired heavily by neoclassical elements. The villa features three stories plus a distinctive tower, which stands out amidst the lush greenery of its expansive garden, now a public park known as Zuhaizti or El Parque de los Patos.

A Glimpse into the Past

After the passing of Dr. Velasco, the property changed hands several times. In the early 20th century, it was acquired by **José de Murga y Reolid**, the first Marquis of Linares, and his wife, **Raimunda de Osorio y Ortega**, after whom the villa is named. Their legacy continued until the property was inherited by their goddaughter, Raimunda Avecilla y Aguado, who became the second Countess of Villapadierna. The villa remained in her family until the mid-20th century.

Architectural Features

The original design of Villa Munda featured a square layout, but over the years, modifications expanded the southern facade, adding two lower structures that shape a distinct "U" courtyard. The villa remains one of the rare examples of 19th-century architecture in Zarautz, alongside the Palacio de Sanz-Enea.

  • Architectural Style: Eclectic with neoclassical influences.
  • Gardens: Surrounded by public gardens, perfect for city exploration.
  • Current Use: Home to the Municipal Conservatory and Academy of Music of Zarautz.

Exploring its unique architecture allows visitors to immerse themselves in the cultural heritage of the region and appreciate the beautiful craftsmanship that has withstood the test of time.
