Czestochowa Audioguías

Czestochowa is organized around a single point: the Jasna Gora monastery on its hill above the city, which has housed the Black Madonna icon since 1382. The icon, a Byzantine-style painting of the Virgin Mary with two scars on her right cheek reportedly from a Hussite attack in 1430, draws between three and four million pilgrims annually and is among the most visited religious sites in Europe. On August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, the Pauline monastery on the hill draws the single largest annual gathering of people in Poland.

The city around the monastery has the character of a place whose purpose is singular but whose people are ordinary.

The Aleja Najswietszej Maryi Panny, or Avenue of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, is the main pedestrian boulevard running from the old town toward the monastery hill, lined with pharmacies and amber shops and the kind of cafes that operate on the assumption that their customers are tired from a long journey and want something reliable. The distance from the old town gate to the monastery entrance is just over three kilometers, a distance that many pilgrims walk in silence.
