Geri Audioguías

Geri sits about ten kilometers southeast of Nicosia, which in Cypriot terms places it on the particular line between proper town and suburb. The settlement grew steadily enough to prompt a 2011 referendum on municipal status -- residents voted yes, which suggests civic pride that small administrative maps sometimes underestimate. By 2024 it had merged with neighboring Latsia into a single unit, reflecting the pressures that smaller municipalities across Cyprus face as the capital continues to expand outward.

The town's oldest cultural mark is preserved not locally but in Nicosia's Cyprus Folk Art Museum, which holds an 1892 painting from Geri depicting Athanasios Diakos, a hero of the Greek War of Independence.

The painting's age is a reminder that this quiet suburb has been paying attention to the wider world for a long time, even from its gentler edges of the capital.
