Unveiling the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas

Nestled on the picturesque Isla de La Cartuja in Sevilla, Southern Spain, the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas—also known as the Monastery of the Cartuja—captures the essence of centuries of history and transformation. This remarkable site, once a revered monastery, now houses the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC), making it a hub for both historical and contemporary cultural experiences.

A Glimpse into History

According to local legends, during Moorish rule, the area was riddled with caves used by potters, and it was in one of these caves that a miraculous image of the Virgin was discovered after the city fell to Christian forces in the 13th century. This discovery heralded the construction of a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria de las Cuevas.

In the 15th century, the archbishop of Seville, along with the noble family of Medina, initiated the establishment of a Franciscan monastery at this location. The monks of the cloistered order of Saint Bruno were later housed here, further enriching the monastery’s spiritual legacy.

"The Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas is not just a place; it's a testament to history, faith, and artistic expression."

Christopher Columbus' remains were among its notable associations—after his initial burial in Valladolid, they were interred here by his son Diego, before being transferred to Colonial Santo Domingo. However, the monastery faced devastation during the Napoleonic invasion, suffering sacking and repurposing into barracks. It was officially vacated in the wake of the general closure of monasteries in the mid-19th century.

From Monastery to Ceramics Factory

In 1839, Charles Pickman, a British entrepreneur, acquired the monastery following the confiscation of church properties. He established a ceramics factory, which commenced production in 1841. With innovative manufacturing methods, he transformed the site into La Cartuja de Sevilla, a renowned ceramics brand that thrived throughout Europe and Latin America.

  • International recognition: The factory earned accolades at numerous international exhibitions, including Paris, London, and Vienna.
  • Royal endorsement: It was designated as a Provider of the Royal House of Spain, and Pickman himself was honored with titles and accolades for his contributions to the craft.
  • Legacy: The iconic bottle-shaped kilns and tall chimney remain as historical landmarks, echoing the factory’s influential past.

Art and Culture at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo

In 1964, the Monastery was declared a national monument. The Andalusian Government later initiated its restoration for the Seville Expo '92, establishing the Monumental Ensemble of the Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas. By 1997, the older part of the monastery transitioned into the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC).

The CAAC is dedicated to the research, conservation, and promotion of contemporary art, showcasing a permanent collection that includes works by influential artists like Luis Gordillo and Louise Bourgeois. Beyond exhibitions, the center offers workshops, seminars, concerts, and other engaging events that bridge historical and contemporary artistic dialogues.

Visitors can explore significant parts of the monastery’s historical grounds, including:

  • The old chain door
  • The atrium
  • Chapels of Santa Catalina and San Bruno
  • The refectory and cloisters
  • Beautiful gardens and orchards
